The #10 Best Book of 2020: Pretty Things

by Janelle Brown (Amazon's #17 Best Book of 2022) ★★★★☆

A book centered around two women with a tangled past. One is a con artist, who’s mother’s cancer has returned and needs cash to pay for treatments. The other is a wealthy social media influencer who has started to lapse in her “influencing” as she deals with a number of personal problems, and who the con artist knows (and holds a grudge against) for things that happened in the past. Wealthy influencer...Con artist in need of money with a grudge...you can see where this is going. Or can you?

The book alternates between the point of view of each woman, and I thought Brown did a great job of shifting the reader’s perceptions as she revealed details about identical events from each character’s experience. The differing viewpoints alone create twists, and then the plot takes turns you probably won’t see coming. A well-crafted yarn.
